The University of Thessaly participated in the XI International Symposium on Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates that was jointly organized with the first International Symposium on Nettings and Screens in Horticulture.

The University of Thessaly participated in the XI International Symposium on Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates that was jointly organized with the first International Symposium on Nettings and Screens in Horticulture. The Symposia were held from 27 to 31 January 2019 in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, under the aegis of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS).

These Symposia were an excellent opportunity to meet with several researchers, academics, technicians, and other experts from public and private sectors involved in the field of greenhouses. The Communication manager of the Project Prof. Nikolaos Katsoulas, member of the Scientific Committee of the above Symposia participated and presented two works carried out by the team of the University of Thessaly related with innovation in greenhouses. The works presented by Prof Katsoulas were the following:

- Development of an insect screen with silica coating for environmentally friendly control of insects in greenhouses

- Effect of manganese on peppermint crop reflectance

During the Symposia and the discussions taking place in the frame of them, Prof Katsoulas presented and discussed the project MED-Greenhouses and the work carried out under this project.

One of the works/projects presented during the Symposia was the following:

- Modelling and dimensioning of circular food production systems fed by geothermal energy: aquaponics.

The above project is highly related to the objectives of MED-Greenhouses project.

During the Symposium Prof Nikolaos Katsoulas had extensive discussions with the coordinator of the GeoFood project of the Wageningen University Dr Esteban Baeza and Alexander Boedijn. They discussed about the possibility of joint activities in the future and possible cooperation in the frame of a future call for proposals related to the activities of both Organisations. The University of Thessaly is also currently carrying out a project (FoodOASIS) related to aquaponics in greenhouses and thus they discussed also for possible synergies in the frame of these projects.
